Magazine cover preperation
My magazine cover is an essential part and so I put in a lot of thought and planning into it. I then decided I want a close up shot of Wafa as they supernatural creature. I want her mouth showing and her hand stretching her mouth. This may imply to the audience that our creature eats it's victims. The background had to be white so I can edit it more easily in Photoshop.
Below is a screen print of the different photos I took:

Poster Preperation
For the poster preparation we needed Wafa to bring in a black scarf to cover her face and also a black robe. We had to find a suitable location and so therefore decided to use the coridor from the last scene of the trailer. This will link the poster with the trailer and help the audience recognize that the poster is of the trailer as the location and supernatural creature is the same.
These are some of the photos taken during the shooting:

Shooting schedule for photography
I have created a schedule of when to take the photos for the poster and a schedule of when to take photos for the magazine.
- For the poster we will take photos on the 26th December. For this shooting I will need Wafa as the supernatural creature.
- For the magazine we will take the photos on the 28th December and in this shooting will also need Wafa as the supernatural creature.

Magazine Mock up
I have created a magazine mock up as this will help me have a visual idea of what my magazine structure will be.
As you can see the tag line will be at the top and under will be the magazine's logo which I have chosen to be Empire. under that will be the key image of Wafa as the supernatural creature. in the sides will be cover lines. Under the key image will be the title of the movie which is The Blind Eye. At the footer bar I will advertise free exclusive posters and also the bar code will be there.
I decided to create another mock up of the magazine but this time with measurements. The reason for this is because the mock up will be much more convenient and useful as I can use the measurements when creating my magazine cover in Photoshop. I will also be ensured that with these measurements the conventions will print in the right alignments and not out of the paper.

Magazine cover convention
Like for the horror film posters I decided to look at covers of magazines with the genre of horror. This will help me when I create my magazine.

Font tests for poster
When looking at possible fonts for my poster I began by looking at
existing horror posters. I looked at the fonts that they had used for
the titles of their films. I really liked these three fonts and would like to use a similar one in my poster.
I decided to go on http://www.dafonts.com/ and found a few I liked.
These are the three that I like. I showed this to 20 classmates and found that the first one was highly popular. So I am planning on using the first font in my poster. Each font may appeal to my audience is because they do not seem childish but very mature yet scary.

Poster mock up
I created a rough mock up to help me visually see what my poster will look like. At the top of the poster I will have a tag line. I will have the key image big in the centre. Near the bottom I will have the title of the movie and the release date under that. I will have the credit right at the end. The key image will be of the villain so the audience identify my poster's genres, which is as a horror/thriller. The main colour should be black as this is associated with fear.
Afterwards I decided to create another poster mock up, which is neater and has measurements. The reason for this is that the first mock up poster may give me a visual idea of how the poster may look, it still is limited when creating the actual poster on Photoshop. This is why I created another one in which I have added measurements. I can use these measurements when creating my poster so I can ensure that when my poster is printed it will not overflow.

Poster conventions
After looking at many various horror film posters and then looking directly at the conventions of these three horror posters I now have a clear idea of what I would like my poster to consist of. My poster will includ the film title, the release date, a key image, credits and a consistent colour scheme. From these ideas I decided to make a mock up of what i would like the poster to look like and this is shown on the following post

Draft of scene one
When we first filmed and edited the first scene, we found that it was too long. It is essential that the audience do not think that the trailer is too long or boring. This is why its better to create a teaser trailer as the audience will not feel as though they are being told the how story.
Our first scene draft was 20 seconds long, which is a very long for a trailer. Also due to the scene only consisting of Samana typing on her laptop the audience may find it boring to watch for 20 seconds. This is why we plan on editing this scene and making it shorter.

Media institutions
Wafa and I have decided to use Lionsgate to be our media institution and will include it in our teaser trailer. The reason why we used Lionsgate and not for example Walt Disney is because Lionsgate has produced films such as the Saw series, The Cabin in the Woods, The Last Exorcism and more. However, Walt Disney produces movies aimed at the younger audience such as Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Enchanted etc. and so would not be an appropriate institution for our movie. However, Lionsgate has produced many horror and thriller movies and so the institution would fit for our movie and the fans of the institution are age appropriate for our movie.

Shooting Schedule
Shooting Schedule
These dates are only a guideline and may be altered and changed later on
1- December 13th
We will be shooting the first scene of the trailer in the college premises. it will be done during our free time and also during college hours so that there would not be any distractions from other pupils. This scene will consists of Samana sitting outdoor and using the laptop.
2- December 18th
we will be using our free time during college hours like the first shooting to shoot the second scene. However, this time, it will be outside the college premises as we will shoot in the alleyway, which is indeed very close to the college. In this scene, we plan to introduce the super natural creature to the trailer and it would show how Samana gets attacked by it.
3- December 28th
we plan to use the college bathroom as part of our story line and for the location of the third scene. The third scene is when Samana would wake up and find the villain in the mirror. It will also include shots that we may need to include within the trailer if there is some parts we do not like when editing.
4- January 3rd
This should be the last day we shoot for the final scene of our trailer which is of Ethel running away from the supernatural creature in the corridors of our college. In this scene the supernatural creature will reveal its identity.
Wafa and I will be taking several other shots that we think will be appropriate to add between the scenes such as the supernatural creature walking across the corridor or the stairs towards the camera. However, this will be done during our own time.

Test shots
We decided to take a few test shot before actually shooting. This will help us familiarize ourselves with the camera and After Effects. I will be doing most of the filming and so it is essential that I know how to use the camera effectively. Wafa will be doing the After Effect editing so she needs to familiarize herself with the software.
The Demon face
First we decided to test the demon face as it was a conventional horror scene. The demon face effect is when someone's face turns from normal to demonic then back to normal. This conventional technique will make our trailer seem more conventional and the audience will be able to identify our trailer's genres. From a bit of research we found that usually the eyes and mouth are enlarged and the facial colour is changed. This is because it is meant to resemble a demonic face. We asked a classmate to act out for us and I recorded the scene. Due to this being a test shot we did not take the mise-en-scene and sound under consideration.
Wafa used After Effects to edit this scene and make it the demon face. I believe that it was a successful test shot as I learnt to film a better footage and also Wafa learnt to do the demon face.
In After Effects we can now use a range of different demon faces and also on different characters. This will make our trailer more conventional.
Here is an example of a demon face someone uploaded on YouTube:
Here is our Demon face test shot:
Mirror reflection
We then decided to test the mirror reflection. This effect is when the reflection does a complete different thing than the actual moving object. We want to use this affect in our trailer as it will make our trailer more conventional and scary. Our trailer will also look like it has a high budget and professionally done.
To be able to do this affect we first decided to as a class mate to act out in front of the bathroom mirror. We tried to get our classmate in front of the mirror in a position where we can see her face as well as the mirror reflection properly. We first wanted to take photographs and test the after effects with the photo.
The photo was then imported to Photoshop in which it was edited. We used a tripod too so that the photo is straight and consistent.
After this test shot went successfully we decided to try this affect with a video. We asked the classmate from the demon face affect to act for us in order to test the mirror reflections shot. We asked our classmate to act as if she is washing her hands and then have a quick glance at the mirror. After that we filmed her in the same position to but instead staring at herself and smiling. We had positioned the camera on a tripod so the footage do not end up shaky and are consent. This also makes it easy to edit the footage.
We then imported the videos on After Effects and so edited it there and created the mirror effect.
Even though there were a few slight mistakes it was still successful for a test shot and now we can use this affect in our trailer. By using Mise-en-scene, sound and lighting we can make the mirror reflection very creepy and a conventional horror scene.
Here is an example from YouTube that someone had uploaded:
Here is our test shot of the mirror reflection:
Grudge walk:
An affect we were interested in was the stuttering walk, this has been used often in movies such as the grudge. This may scare the audience and make them want to watch the movie. This is why it was essential to test this type of shot. We used a footage of Wafa in black robes and a scream mask walking towards the camera. The location was a narrow hall way with dim lighting. This created a scary and tense atmosphere which was ideal.
CCTV camera
the CCTV camera affect is an essential affect we needed to master as we are planning on using it throughout our trailer. The reason for this is that we wanted the CCTV to show the audience that the villain is supernatural as you can not see it in the CCTV camera. The CCTV can also be argued that it shows the reality and that the supernatural creature is an illusion. We decided test this affect by putting the camera on a tripod on top of the alleyway and film someone walking through the alleyway. We then changed the color of the footage to a green shade and added a timer through Adobe After Effects. Once we did this we saw that this effect will be very useful to use in our trailer as it is an essential part of our narrative and trailer. Also, we believe that it is also successful due to it setting the verisimilitude of an actual CCTV camera and the fact that there is a voyeurism and no one is aware of it.

Recce
Wafa and I decided that we would like to utilize different places in and out of our college. This is to make sure that the locations we will be shooting are suitable. Below are images of the different places we have chosen to use. These photos will also allow us to decide how and where we will place the camera when filming and also how much space it will allow the actors have to be able to show full body movement.
We needed to find a location for the first scene which needed to to be preferably a bench outside a dull and isolated building. We found this location in our collage and it fit in with the criteria so we decided to use this location for our first scene. We decided that Samana could sit at the end of this location and the camera could be placed near the metal railings to show the CCTV footage of Samana.
Fortunately our college is near an alleyway and so it we could use this location for the alleyway scene. The first alleyway image shows where we could place the camera for the CCTV viewpoint. This alleyway seems to be the perfect location for the first appearance of the supernatural creature.
This location is the girl's bathroom in our college. Wafa and I think that we can use it in
our trailer as there are many 'depictions and myths' that links to horror
which we thought may be appropriate. This shot shows how where the CCTV camera will be placed and what parts of the bathroom will be shown through this camera angle.

Treatment
To create our treatment Wafa and I came together and put all our ideas
together for or trailer and ancillary tasks. We then brought both our ideas
together to decide for our final ideas for our products.
Film Title
The Blind Eye
Synopsis:
Together we created the following synopsis for our
trailer:
An
Asian girl is sitting outside a dull and isolated building whilst on her
laptop. She decided to go on a website that is rumoured to cause a supernatural
creature to come and haunt but she does not believe it and thinks not much of
it even when the website warns her. A few days later she is walking through an
alleyway alone and feels the presence of a dark force behind her. After looking
back and seeing nothing is there she carries on walking but then the
supernatural creature hits her with an unknown object. She then gains
conscience in a toilet and still feeling a little dizzy she walks toward the sink,
which has a mirror on top and washes her face. When she looks at the mirror she
sees the supernatural creature and runs away. After another Asian girl decides
to go on the cursed website after hearing the rumours and is then chased by the
villain who at the last scene is about to reveal its identity.
My
Poster Synopsis:
Can
your eyes ignore what the mind sees?
FORMAT:
For our horror/thriller magazine and poster will be
using a 'jpeg' format. This is after we create the ancillary product on
Photoshop. The reason why we will use Photoshop is because we can create our
ancillary products to look professional and attractive through this software.
The editing tools in Photoshop we can liquefy the actors and also make them
look flawless. The text on the magazines and posters will be able to look
professional through the use of the fonts and editing tools. The camera we will
be using to take footage for our trailer as well as photographs for our posters
and magazine will be Nikon D3100. The reason for this is because the Nikon
D3100 takes high quality footage and photographs, which are vital, as this will
make our trailer and ancillary tasks, look professional. Our trailer and ancillary tasks will be
distributed on YouTube and Facebook as
this ensure a wider audience will be able to access our products and even have
a chance to leave comments.
Estimated
Duration:
1 minute, 21 seconds.
We decided to create a teaser trailer as this will
leave the audience with a lot of enigmas and also keep the trailer and
supernatural creature a mystery.
Intended Audience:
We are aiming at the audience within the age range of
16-24, so mid-teens and young adults. The reason for this is because our genre
is horror/thriller and so not suitable for a younger audience. Also the
character in our trailer are within that age range and so are more likely to
attract an audience within the ages 16-24. Our product is not
specifically aimed at an audience within a certain class or status but from our
secondary research we have found that the actors in horror/thriller movies are
usually white middle-class and so by using Asian actors we may attract a wider
and more multicultural audience. Also due to all our actors being female
we may attract more of the female audience.
Style/Genre:
The genre of our trailer is a crossover of horror and
thriller. This is because through our primary and secondary research we have
found that our potential audience would rather watch a crossover of two genres
rather than a product with one genre. The tone that we want to create within
our trailer is of fear and isolation. This is conventional as most
horror/thriller trailer tries to create this tone too. We have created a teaser
trailer instead of a normal trailer so that not a lot of the story and narrative
is given away and the audience are left with enough enigmas to want to watch
the movie. This is also why we did not include scenes of the supernatural
character actually killing anyone. However, to make sure that the audience
think of or trailer as being scary we did add a few scary scenes that may make
their hearts race. This is what all horror/thriller trailers do and so due to
this our audience may be able to recognize the genres.
RATIONALE:
Our product is relevant to our target audience, which
are people within the age range of 16-24. Our target audience is slightly more
directed towards females due to more female characters; however, both males and
female within the age range of 16-24 are still targeted and relevant for the
trailer. Our product will be relevant as due to the genre of horror/thriller it
will not be suitable for a younger audience of people under 16. We have found
from or research that the common group of people that will watch our trailer is
16-24 year old people.
FEASIBILITY:
The actors that we will use will need to be very
flexible so that if we need to shoot a scene last minute they should be
available. This is why we decided that Wafa should be the main character that
is the supernatural creature. As she is in our group it means that I can rely
on her to be available if we need to shoot last minute. We will also be
using locations that we are able to access easily that will not cost a lot to
reach as we have a low budget.
BUDGET:
Due to our budget being low we will borrow equipment such as cameras and filming equipment instead of buying them. The actors we hire will also be voluntary and will work for free. This will ensure that we do not go over budget and spend a lot of money. So therefore we will be able to make high quality products whilst saving money. However, if we do need to spend a lot of money for example on the costumes then we will hold a fundraising in order to save up money.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
- Nikon
D3100 camera
- Computer-
iMac
- Editing
software- Final cut pro
- Photoshop
Ideas
Once my research was completed I had a good understanding of the basics of horror and thriller such as the typical codes and conventions. Once both me and Wafa and I both completed all our research we decided to hold a meeting in which we discussed our ideas for the trailer. We realised that we had different ideas and so in order to find a similarity in our ideas or an new idea that we both liked we decided to create a small visual storyboard with our ideas.
This is my small visual storyboard with my ideas:
Once both Wafa and I finished our small visual storyboard we decided to find what they had in common and elaborated on that. Once we were able to that we came up with the following:
SYNOPSIS
Location:
Wafa and I also decided to concentrate on the themes of our trailer. This is because if we have really meaningful and moral themes synced in our narrative structure through the mise-en-scene, character and other elements we may attract a more sophisticated audience. The Themes that we have carefully chosen are:
The reason why we wanted to actors to be Asian is because as I mentioned before we want our trailer and ancillary products to attract a wider audience internationally. A way to do this is to use multicultural actors and not due middle class white actors as most movie including horror use.
This is my small visual storyboard with my ideas:
My
idea consists of a supernatural yet unknown and mysterious haunts and murders
vulnerable people who are cursed. I want the trailer to include CCTV footage to
show that he cannot be seen by anyone but the victim. Also I want the character
to be preferably Asian in order to attract a more multicultural audience. I
would want there to be a sense of isolation for the victim to make them feel
'alone' so perhaps we could film in a dark and narrow alleyway. By creating a
supernatural creature that has not been used in any other movie or is similar
to other movie villains we may attract the audience more as they would want to
know about our villain.
Once both Wafa and I finished our small visual storyboard we decided to find what they had in common and elaborated on that. Once we were able to that we came up with the following:
SYNOPSIS
The
first scene in the trailer will be of an Asian girl sitting outside a dull and
isolated building whilst on her laptop. She decided to go on a website that is rumoured
to cause a supernatural creature to come and haunt but she does not believe it
and thinks not much of it even when the website warns her. A few days later she
is walking through an alleyway alone and feels the presence of a dark force
behind her. After looking back and seeing nothing is there she carries on
walking but then the supernatural creature hits her with an unknown object. She
then gains conscience in a toilet and still feeling a little dizzy she walks
toward the sink, which has a mirror on top and washes her face. When she looks
at the mirror she sees the supernatural creature and runs away. After another
Asian girl decides to go on the cursed website after hearing the rumors and is
then chased by the villain who at the last scene is about to reveal its
identity.
One
of the reasons why Wafa and I decided to use this synopsis is to warn those who
do not use the internet safely about people who are murdered for meeting
strangers they met online. Our idea shows social medias in a negative ways and
shows the risks people take by using them and entering the personal details on
them.
Scenes
Even
though we planned the scenes for our trailer realistically and with our budget
in mind there still might be slight changes in the scenes when actually filmed
and edited together. A reason for this may be that we might find that an extra
scene may make the trailer look more professional or by editing out a scene the
trailer may look more slick and run smoothly.
During
our meeting Wafa and I planned the following scenes:
- The trailer
will start with a green band and horror institution introduction footage,
which preferably will be Lionsgate.
- Samana
(the actor playing the first victim) is seen through a CCTV camera and
another regular one of which she is sitting outside an isolated building.
The audience will not be able to see what she is doing on her laptop. This
scene will end with her closing the laptop and preparing to leave through the
CCTV.
- In the
second scene Samana is seen through a CCTV camera but this time she is
walking through an alleyway. The CCTV camera will capture footage of only
her walking but the other camera would also capture the villain, which
attacks her. This scene ends with Samana falling due to being hit, however
the audience will not see what attacked her through the CCTV, although
through the other camera they will see the supernatural creature but not
clearly.
- In the
third scene Samana wakes up in a public bathroom and walks to the mirror,
which then she finds the supernatural creature inside the mirror and she
runs away.
- The final
scene is where Ethel (the second victim) will be seen running in dark
isolated corridors and is chased by the supernatural creature who keeps
appearing in different sides of the corridor. Like the other scenes, there
will be a consistent use of CCTV camera shots.
Location:
Wafa
and I have decided to use the following locations in our trailer:
- Alleyway
- Benches
outside an isolated building
- corridors
- public
bathroom
Themes
Wafa and I also decided to concentrate on the themes of our trailer. This is because if we have really meaningful and moral themes synced in our narrative structure through the mise-en-scene, character and other elements we may attract a more sophisticated audience. The Themes that we have carefully chosen are:
- Disbelief
- Uncertainty
- Truth vs.
Reality
- Fear
- Isolation
Actors
Wafa
and I held a meeting to discuss who to cast for our trailer and ancillary
tasks. Due to this being an essential aspect we decided we can only cast actors
that are generally good at acting and also meet the characters' criteria.
After
a lot of careful thinking we decided to cast the following:
- Samana
Gurung - An Asian girl who is seen through the opening scenes of the
trailer.
- Ethel
Fuenzalida - Another Asian actor who will be seen at the last scene of the
trailer
The reason why we wanted to actors to be Asian is because as I mentioned before we want our trailer and ancillary products to attract a wider audience internationally. A way to do this is to use multicultural actors and not due middle class white actors as most movie including horror use.
Supernatural
Creature
Wafa
and I have discussed what type of the supernatural creature we want thoroughly.
We finally decided that Wafa should as as the supernatural character. Even
though we had found the actor for this role we still had not figured out what
the supernatural creature will look like and also the costume it will wear. We
did know that we wanted the identity of the creature to be hidden and so we
could use one of the following:
- Scream
Mask
- Plain
theatrical mask
- Halloween
Mask
- Fully
covered face
We
decided that out supernatural creature will wear fully black attire such as a
long black robe. This however, is similar to the Scream's villain and my take
the creativeness of our creature so we decided that the characteristics of our
supernatural creature will be completely different to that of the Scream's
villain. We have also decided that we will not actually show footage of our
supernatural creature killing the victims so the audience become curious on how
the creature kills it's victims.
Film
Title
Wafa and I created a Prezi together to help us decide
on which film title to use and why it will be suitable for our trailer and
ancillary tasks.
